We are currently working hard to develop the Sultans Trail, a  new European, historical long distance walking path from Vienna to Istanbul.

On 10/10/10 is the official opening of the new office of Sultans Trail International in Haarlem. You are cordially invited to celebrate this with us!

In 2009 a number of volunteers have walked the trail. Click for photos from  Austria, Hongaria, Bulgaria, Serbia en Turkey.
In June 2010 the Turkish part of the Sultans Trail is marked. Click here for a colorful impression.

Süleyman Kanuni, sultan of the Ottoman Empire, made the trip from Istanbul to Vienna for the first time in 1529, and then again in 1532. Both times the Sultan and his court did not succeed in penetrating the city of Vienna. At the spot outside Vienna where the sultan put his tents the Habsburg Emperor built a pleasure castle. That is why the historic Sultan Trail begins at the edge of Vienna. The path ends at the tomb of the Sultan, behind the Süleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul.

In the summer of 2009 a number of people tested the Sultan Trail. Sedat Cakir walked from Vienna through Hungary, Serbia and Bulgaria to the Turkish border. In Bulgaria he walked with Kyra Kuitert and from Edirne (Turkey) seven friends joined in. At this moment two people are marking the Turkish part of the trail.

The Sultan Trail makes partly use of existing European long distance paths, including parts of the E8 and the Donauweg. Beside that the path runs more or less parallel to the Via Comitis (the original road to Jerusalem) en to the historic Sufipath to the tomb of the Sufi master Mevlana Rumi from Purbach in Austria) to Konya (Turkey).

All those that walked the Sultan Trail so far share the same opinion: "It was sometimes pioneering but the experience was full of authenticity. The many natural and historical highlights, the varied landscape and the hospitality of the local people contributed greatly to this experience."
